It Takes a Village to Build a Village
Many families lost their homes to Typhoon Tino which hit Negros in November 2025. As part of our response to that disaster, we distributed building materials to help families repair their homes. However, some families could not simply rebuild their homes because the areas where they used to live had been declared no build zones. LGUs housed these families for months in evacuation centers while looking for suitable relocation sites. Together with the LGU of La Carlota, we are building a village of 105 homes for families who had lost their homes to the terrible typhoon. Click here to read more about this initiative. On their end, the LGU provided the land. They will also provide access to clean water, roadways, and a sewage system.
NVC is in charge of building the homes, and many individuals, families and even corporations supported this project. They say it takes a village to raise a child and we agree! We also believe it takes a village and we are grateful to every member of this village who sponsored the 105 homes. In addition to that, we would like to thank our partners at Cordova Construction Services (CCS) for being very reliable contractors.

She Had a Dream
Construction has been going according to schedule, and we are happy with the progress of the project. But on the first night of March, NVC President Millie Kilayko had a dream. She dreamt about how we could make the village even better. Just like Joseph had a dream of a coat of many colors, Ms. Millie dreamed that the village would be a village of many colors. When she woke up, she decided to start working towards a new goal: painting all the homes in the village.
A coat of paint would not only better protect the marine plywood walls of the homes from the elements, but it would brighten up the village. Furthermore, Ms. Millie felt that a splash of color would help bring back a bit of hope to the families who will live in the village.
Thank you to Hiligaynon News and Features for being the first to pick up the story. Click here to view their post.
We would also like to thank Digicast Negros for writing an article on this story. Click here to read the online article.
And to author Ambo Delilan who was moved to write a poem about it. Click here to read his poem inspired by our project.
Painting in Progress
We have quite a long way to go to get sponsorship for the painting of all 105 homes in the village. However, we remain positive that we’ll get this done. As of March 13, we have found generous donors for the painting of 36 homes. We were touched that the first to pledge towards this cause was author and translator Erik Matti. To those who might not know, Mr. Matti translated Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved book The Little Prince into Hiligaynon. This home painting project in La Carlota touched Mr. Matti’s heart because his mother hails from there. We hope and pray we will be able to find sponsors for the remaining 69 homes in due time.
