The Spirit of Service
Canadian American School (CAS) is an international school with campuses in Makati and Bonifacio Global City, Philippines. The school organizes many activities to develop its students holistically. For instance, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the school celebrates Service Week. Members of the CAS community always do their best to be helpful members of the community, but Service Week is special. During this week, the CAS community makes a concerted effort to give back to the community.
For Service Week 2022, the CAS community came to the aid of children in Siargao. When Super Typhoon Odette hit the Philippines in December 2021, the island was where the storm first made landfall. NVC Foundation started the Mingo for Siargao campaign to raise funds for Mingo Meals for children in Siargao. The CAS community organized a walkathon to support the campaign.
Walk for Hope
As Covid safety measures in Metro Manila still prohibited big gatherings in early 2022, the school had to get creative. On January 29, members of the CAS community got together (virtually) and walked as much as they could wherever they could.
Some students had gone back to their home countries at the start of the pandemic. However, they continued their studies at Canadian American School which was holding virtual classes at the time. Because of that, Walk for Hope became an international walkation! Students in countries such as the United States and Turkey participated in it. Family members joined in as well.
Thanks to everyone’s hard work, the CAS community was able to raise enough to sponsor daily Mingo Meals for 500 children for 2 months!
Many of the Walk for Hope participants were preschoolers. They proved that you are never to young to be of service to others, you just need to have a big heart!
