Assisting Survivors of Typhoon Tino
Typhoon Tino hit Negros Occidental on November 4, 2o25. In the days after the storm, NVC provided relief goods to many communities in the area. The storm destroyed many homes so NVC made sure to also provide construction materials to families whose homes were damaged or lost. NVC reached out to the local government of La Carlota to ask if residents needed construction materials. However, the city government informed NVC that they first wanted to create a safe relocation site where families who used to live in risky locations could move to. Because of that, we decided to wait before providing construction materials to La Carlota. Eventually, NVC decided to work in partnership with the La Carlota city government to build a new community in the Ferlou Relocation Site. The city provided the land and NVC took care of building 105 homes on that site.
Help from the Assumption Family
The family of Assumption schools, alumnae and congregations sponsored 18 of those 105 homes and Assumpta Technical School from San Simon, Pampanga was the first from the Assumption family to reach out to NVC. Assumpta Technical School is a mission school and it does not have a lot of resources. However, as Agnes Pangilinan, the school’s Finance Officer, mentioned to NVC President Millie Kilayko, the school has experienced flooding too and so they knew what the La Carlota families were going through.

A Reversal of Roles
Heavy rainfall at the end of August this year caused heavy flooding in Pampanga. Families of the schools faculty, staff and students were all affected by the flood. The residents of the relocation site in La Carlota heard this news from the NVC team and were moved to help the school that rushed to help them. Someone took out a box, labeled it “Assumption” and passed it around. With smiles on their faces, people dropped in coins and bills to help the Assumpta Technical School Community. One donor had cancer and could not stand up but she happily dropped her share into the box.
The NVC team was moved to witness this outpouring of love and generosity. Soon after, we forwarded the collection to the school.
