NVC built homes in La Carlota for 105 families who had lost their homes to Typhoon Tino. These homes were inspired by the design of the classic bahay kubo or hut made out of native materials such as components made from bamboo, nipa palms or coconut trees. While the homes in La Carlota have GI sheet roofs and marine plywood walls, the floors are elevated and made out of bamboo slats. This elevated design and slatted floor allow air to naturally cool the inside of the home.
However, this coming El Niño is expected to be extra brutal. Despite the clever bahay kubo design, we expect it to get quite hot in the homes, especially because of the GI sheets. So we were hoping to improve the homes by adding a layer of insulation. Donations from friends came in and on Fairy Godmother Day (September 5), we were able to send over 28 rolls of insulation. This first batch was prioritized because there were 28 families that had seniors, sick family members or babies. We hoped to provide insulation for the remaining 77 homes over the next few months.
But our Fairy Godmother network made some magic happen quickly! First NVC President Millie Kilayko remembered envelope of money a kind soul had dropped off to be used for our Fairy Godmother Day. Ms. Millie happily received the donation and put it on her desk for safekeeping and processing later in the day. However, she got busy with other things and the envelope slipped her mind. She remembered it after the Fairy Godmother Team delivered the first batch of insulation. So we used it to purchase 8 more sets of insulation. Another Fairy Godmother sponsored the remaining 69 sets as a way to Sharelebrate her birthday. And with that we were able to provide insulation for all the homes in the Ferlou Relocation Site.
