Beginnings of Mingo
NVC Foundation was established in August 2010. We immediately set out to devise a tool to fight hunger in the Philippines. So, we developed Mingo. Mingo is a complementary food product made from monggo, malunggay and rice.
The Very First Mingo Meals Nutrition Program
On September 20, 2011, we enrolled 1,000 children in 12 sites of Negros Occidental in the first-ever 6-month Mingo Meals Feeding Program. We saw how these children fared better than a control group of children from the same economic status and environment. The feeding program had clearly made a difference. This is an actual photo of Day 1.
Numbers Served
We have been using Mingo for our community feeding programs for the past 11 years. So far, 43,435 children have been part of our 6-month Mingo Meals Nutrition Program.
We developed Mingo for children from 6 months to 5 years of age. However, because Mingo is a nutritious meal that is conveniently packed, many people took notice of it. In no time, Mingo became popular for older children and as an emergency meal. Because of this, you will find Mingo in evacuation centers and community pantries. As of July 31, 18,794,755 we have distributed Mingo Meals.
Mingo has made its mark in 52 provinces around the country. And we hope to branch out to even further. We will gladly climb many mountains and cross many rivers to reach those in need.
July is Nutrition Month in the Philippines and we are happy to close Nutrition Month with these numbers!
