Home is Where the Art Is
The great Anita Magsaysay Ho was a prolific painter who specialized in Social Realism, Modernism and post-Cubism. Many of her works depicted the role of women in Filipino culture. Because of her body of work, the Senate of the Philippines nominated her for the National Artist Award in 2012. Ultimately, the resolution did not pass as she was a Canadian citizen at the time of her death. However, she is still well respected for her contribution to the Arts.
From time to time, our Artisans of Hope receive requests to make one-of-a-kind mosaic pieces. Imagine how honored we felt when Ms. Doris Magsaysay Ho reached out to us to commission our Artisans of Hope to create one of her late mother’s paintings in mosaic.
Due to the pandemic, the delivery of the artwork suffered some setbacks and delays, but the painting is finally home. It now graces the entrance lobby of the family building in Ermita, Manila.
Thank you, Ms. Doris Magsaysay Ho, for granting us the privilege to take on this project of a lifetime!
A New Project
In late June, NVC President Millie Kilayko and other NVC representatives visited Ms. Doris Magsaysay Ho at the family building. Even though the art piece in the building’s lobby was made in the workshop in Ms. Kilayko’s home, it was the first time for her to see the art piece as a whole. The finished work took her breath away! And something else happened to take her breath away once more. Ms. Doris Magsaysay Ho asked if the Artisans of Hope could work on another project for the family. Though it is on a smaller scale, it is still a huge honor and we hope the client will approve of the finished work!
We will reveal the details when the project is done but you can get a sneak peek below:
Done and Dusted!
Our Artisans carefully repaired some damaged portions of the mosaic sent to us. A prolific painter, Anita Magsaysay-Ho only made two or three mosaic artworks and we were given the honor to work on one of them. This was a mural of the Three Magi done in bits of broken tiles and native clay cooking pots (palayok). The Artisans finished their repairs in early August and we shipped the work back to the family. We will share photos of the art piece when it is back at home.
