Fifty fiberglass fishing boats were given to a non-profit organization destined for fishermen from Barangays 88, 89, and 90 in Tacloban City.
The turnover was under the Peter Project 2 program of the Negrense Volunteers for Change (NVC).
Millie Kilayko, president of NVC explained that the project was initially intended only for residents of Negros who wanted to become fisherman, but after the devastation of typhoon Yolanda in the Visayas, they saw the need to help the fishery sector.
And with suggestions from their partner-donors, they extended the project to include provinces affected by super typhoon Yolanda in three regions of the Visayas.
Some 1,600 fiberglass fishing boats are being planned to be distributed by the group to typhoon-affected places.
Kilayko said the cities of Tacloban and Ormoc, towns of Dulag and Javier, and some places in Samar island are to be given the boats.
Her will be back in March to distribute the second batch of fiberglass fishing boats.
Kilayko said a volunteer from their organization conducts the listing and verification of beneficiaries to ensure that those who will receive the fishing boats are not yet beneficiaries of assistance from other agencies or organizations that also provide fishing boats.
Vice-Mayor Jerry Yaokasin, who coordinated with NVC, said that it is better to give the survivors fishing boats than rather giving them food to eat.
Yaokasin said fishing boats give new hope to every fisherman and will not only provide food for their families, but also for the entire community.
