Students from Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan) have been going door to door to distribute Mingo Meals that have been donated by NVC donors.
With too few and under-resourced evacuation centers able to take care of the displaced, majority of them have actually been staying with relatives and friends in nearby cities and municipalities. In Cagayan de Oro, relief goods are distributed house to house among evacuees documented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Cagayan de Oro city is a 2.5-hour drive from Marawi and has also received an influx of people fleeing the violence in Marawi.
Why help those outside evacuation sites?
Ms. Jaminah Pandi of Rise Against Hunger Foundation, one of NVC’s Mingo for Marawi ground partners, says that it’s also important to focus on those outside evacuation sites. Most of the large aid organizations and charity groups already have an established presence in the shelters, while those outside (and they are the majority) may not be able or know how to get the help they need.
Food supply is a problem
Evacuees are going hungry, and the nearby areas that have taken them in are stretched thin in terms of their capability to help. The Philippine Daily Inquirer has reported on the “need to bring in food supply into towns where evacuees were staying.” The article goes on to say that “food supply has tightened in several towns as indicated by the increase in the prices of basic goods.”
You can help!
NVC will continue the Mingo for Marawi drive while the conflict is ongoing and evacuees remain displaced.
